When was the last time you sat and listened to what other people value? Have you noticed the strong correlation between their values and how their life is shaped? Our lives are driven by what we value and love.
In the Old Testament, wisdom is not a description of intelligence but involves knowing how to live. Accordingly, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. When wisdom is understood as a description of how someone believes life should be lived, different values regarding how to live could be described as different "wisdoms."
James speaks of a wisdom which comes from the devil (James 3:5). This way of approaching life values promoting self and craving the things of this world (James 3:14-15, 4:1-2). To approach life in this manner results in quarrels, disorder and every evil practice (James 3:16, 4:2) while also making that person an enemy of God (James 4:4). On the other hand, the wisdom which comes from God values purity, peace, mercy, producing good fruit, being considerate, submissive, impartial and sincere (James 3:17).
What we value will shape our behavior and the characteristics of our lives. What is fueling the engine of our lives? A self-centered desire to acquire recognition, position, the latest styles, or perhaps the latest technology? Or are we driven by a godly love for peace, mercy and doing good unto others?
